Hi Lim,

Thanks for the historical data, it installed fine (after mucking around a bit) cheesy This is a good product.

Quickly looking for stocks across different sectors is a pain though, even with the Find Local Security function.  undecided

Is it possible to have an option to get the data in 1 folder instead of the 25 different folders? I think a lot of people will be very happy  smiley

Use the downloader.
First convert them back into ASCII
Then convert them into MS file but this time into ONE folder.
Thereafter manually convert future ASCII into MS file manually into one folder.

Hi Maxforce:

As you have pointed out in another post, this method is prone to manual error.. just needs one mistake and have to restore database. Backing up the database daily is an unneeded chore (especially when you consider the total man-hours in multiplying that effort by every one who has to do it) and I just know I might screw up once or twice, especially at the end of a long day Smiley

If the data could be delivered in one folder to start with, then we could use Lim's nice autoupdate to automatically update, right?

Before doing this, fews consideration need attention:-

1. If you are using TradeStation, each folder you have to set point value. If you mix stock and loan to one folder, you are having difficulty to set point value for all symbols. You have to go one by one.

2. Sectorial play is not more available.

3. Raw data in folders arrangement are actually depend on how good a charting program is programmed to pick it. If you are using Advanced Get (another piece of standalone charting program), data path one main folder "c:\MetaStock Data" is actually capturing all 25 sub-folders data. Simply type one symbol and chart display immediately.

You can always merge all symbols to one folder, no need to export to ASCII and import again. Just create one folder, put any name you like and use Downloader to copy all symbols to this folder. For updating, manually select all 25 text files and pointing to this new folder for conversion, not more using my autoupdate program. Use at your own risk!

Of course, there are always pro and con for this stuff. You just have to work out. Think on if you are also maintaining oversea stock, will you merge it?

Thanks for the response. I think a lot of people will benefit from being able to search easily. Just to clarify,

1) You mean stock & loan products? How about just separating into 2 folders instead of 25?

2) If data users want to buy by sectors, they can always refer to a list (found in newspapers or online), right?

3) How do you use Advanced Get?

Yeah, that's what Maxforce suggested, and also warned about possible screw-ups, and also can't use your convenient Autoupdate feature.

At this moment, I would say "use as it" and you may modify what ever directory structure you like just for your own convenience.

So no go then for 1 folder? If there is demand for it, would be technically easy to do so?

Just wondering, how do you use the Advanced Get?

Thanks, Lim

Thanks for pointing that out, it's just that you mentioned it here and then there was no response. I will open a new thread. Cheers.
